Modernizing a Core Business Platform to Stay Competitive
The Bonotel travel platform, a key asset for Definition6's client, was built on aging technology that hindered its ability to scale and adapt to market demands. The challenge was to execute a complete digital modernization, replacing the outdated system with a flexible, scalable, and user-centric platform. The project required a senior leader who could provide the end-to-end vision, from the high-level AWS architecture down to the hands-on development of its most complex application components.
Leadership from Cloud Architecture to API Development
I provided the senior technical leadership and architectural expertise for the entire project. My hands-on approach ensured that the strategic vision was translated into high-quality engineering, starting with the cloud foundation:
1. Secure AWS Cloud Foundation
I began by architecting and implementing the digital cloud infrastructure within AWS. My focus was on ensuring the website's hosting environment was built for high availability, performance, and security from day one. I also contributed to refining the CI/CD pipeline to ensure efficient and reliable deployments.
2. Flexible, CMS-Based Architecture
I designed a modern, content-driven application architecture using MongoDB as the backend. This provided the flexibility needed for a dynamic, content-rich travel platform that could be easily updated by the business teams.
3. Hands-On API Layer Development
I personally led the hands-on development of the core RESTful APIs in Java. This involved creating a clean, efficient, and well-documented interface that served as the central nervous system for the entire platform, connecting the frontend to all backend services.
4. Advanced Search Integration
To create a market-leading user experience, I engineered a sophisticated, high-performance search functionality. This involved integrating SOLR/Lucene for powerful indexing and the Google Places API for rich, geo-location queries, delivering a fast and intuitive booking tool for users.
